Happy 2008 and New Year Resolutions

Happy New Year to all of you!

Last night, we hung out at the house with the kids and some of their friends. We ordered Cafe Rio, 6 Little Caesar’s Pizzas, and lots of soda and chips for everyone. Amanda busted her butt cleaning up the basement and creating the perfect mix of music on a CD for the party.

The weather in Utah last night was COLD (5 degrees) and CLEAR. We had a fabulous sunset and the mountains looked spectacular. At 8pm, several of the kids arrived. They were excited and happy to hang out together.

Evan was glued to the Indiana/Oklahoma State Insight Bowl. Even though IU didn’t win, they made a valiant effort and showed promise for future seasons. Bloomington, IN is known for basketball and has been called “A drinking town with a football problem.” IU hadn’t been invited to a bowl game since the Independence Bowl in 1993 and you could see the joy in the Hoosiers’ faces. There was a touching half time show of the recent passing of their head coach, Terry Hoeppner (”Hep”). Hep lost his fight with cancer, but restored confidence to the IU football program.

Evan recently discovered a channel on our television that was showing classic movies. He had never seen the movie “Planet of the Apes” from start to finish, so after the Insight Bowl, Evan and some of the kids watched it. Planet of the Apes was my brother and my all time favorite movie, tied with the original black and white King Kong. We even had the action figures.To bring in the new year, all of the awake kids and I ran outside to scream Happy New Year to the neighborhood. We celebrated the arrival of 2008 with party poppers, cheers and screams, plus a few sparklers left over from July 4th. Our neighbor Rita blew her French Horn! Several other neighbors launched their illegal fireworks, which seem much safer with 8 inches of snow on the ground.

How wonderful is the ritual of starting a new year! A fresh, clean start on life!

My resolutions?

More Gratitude. Today I am going to start a personal gratitude journal for 2008.
More Healthy. Less refined sugar and simple carbs. Add more fruits and vegetables to my diet.
More Confidence. Be aware and remove self derogating remarks, no “I am just . . .” or “I am only . . .” in my vocabulary and no other self-talk stinking thinking. Push myself in new directions, even if it scares me. Take some risks.
