One of my guilty confessions is that I am a huge fan of American Idol. Not the “Gong Show” element from the first part of the season, but finding those people with potential, and watching them develop and become stars.
This song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” sung by Jason Castro, just blew me away! Isn’t he dreamy?! He actually purchased and learned to play the ukulele that very same week.
I would like to dedicate this song to all of you. You are beautiful people and I pray all your dreams are realized!

This is not exactly how I would sing the song, but he does have a nice voice.
I love that version done with the ukulele! Someone else (can’t remember who; from Hawaii?) sang a version with the ukulele and that’s where I first heard it!
That version was first sung by “IZ” (Israel KamakawiwoÊ»ole), a Hawaiian musician my husband and I absolutely LOVE. He died at the age of 38 and is considered an icon and hero in his native Hawaii. Before his performance on Idol, Jason Castro introduced the song as a “Brudduh Iz” number. If you have never heard Iz sing it before, you would think Castro had the lyrics all screwed up but that’s just the way Iz sings it. I loved it – I thought Castro did a great job!
