Do you know, lilies are my FAVOURITE flowers? I held a calla lily bouquet on my wedding day, which I absolutely adored but my favourite lilies to have indoors are stargazer lilies - they smell absolutely divine. It's truly impossible to feel unhappy with the wonderful scent of lilies in the air. Until I saw your fantastic photo it never occurred to me that these wonders of nature can be grown in one's own garden. I have nowhere to plant at the moment but when I do, I will plant an aromatic garden full of fragrant flowers and you will have been my inspiration as I'd only previously talked of having an organic fruit/vegetable garden. Thank you so much for sharing the flowers and the wonderful landscape in the background which you're blessed to see every day. The photo has lifted my spirits! xxx They are wonderful!! MY FANTSTIC MAMOUTH SUNFLOWERS HAVE HAD A TTERRIBLE YEAR. FIRST THEY WERE NIBBLED TO STUBS BY THE BUNNIES. AFTER REPLANTING BY SEED AND PROPPING UP ONE REMAINING STALK THEY WERE GROWING TO AN ALL TIME HIGH OF 7 FEET! ALAS, ONE DAY, FOLLOWING A WEEK AWAY, WE FOUND THE DEER HAD STOMPED ON THE MESH NET FENCE, ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE GARAGE, AND CHOPPED THEM DOWN TO A FOOT OR SO. THE RIGHT SIDE ONES WERE STILL THRIVING. AND THEN LAST WEEK ALL THREE ON THE RIGHT SIDE WERE CHOMPED IN TWO! ONE HAD SURVIVED ENOUGH THAT WE COULD SPLINT IT WITH POPSICLE STICKS AND DUCK TAPE. The first year, they didn't reach their full six feet. I don't think they even blossomed. I only feed them dark good soil and mulch from a local Biograss company. I think they like this location, on the east side of my house. I do not need to do anything to them. Their stalks are extremely strong and withstand even the Salt Lake Valley windstorms well. Another thing I do, and maybe it is just superstition, not founded on any science, I let the stalks die on their own and do not clip them down after they bloom. Their huge green stalks are pretty even without blooms, and the big dead stalks make great decorations around Halloween time. By the beginning of winter I wrestle them into the compost pile. Since everything else this year in my garden is having a difficult time (my tomatoes especially), these lillies give me a lot of satisfaction (and my roses too).
