Well, Christmas is almost here and that means that New Years is quickly approaching. New Years parties are a great excuse to get outside your comfort zone and try something a little daring with your makeup. There is plenty of time to try out a few new looks in your bathroom before the big night arrives, and it can be really fun to sit at your mirror with all your goodies strewn before you.

If you’re looking for a few ideas on what to do for your holiday look, there are plenty of tutorials out there to help you out. Total Beauty has an entire section of videos on skincare, hairstyling, and makeup. They even include looks mimicking some of your favorite celebrities’ face and hair. The “Blogs We Love” tab at the top will lead you to scads of information from their extensive list of beauty blogs, including many of our favorites. I’m a huge fan of Marlena over there at Makeup Geek. She has an amazing tutorial section that has individual color combinations and more general instructions on things like “How to apply false eyelashes” and “How to apply eye makeup”. She’s easy to understand and gives simple instructions and helpful hints.

If you don’t have the time to invest in a whole new look, your look can get glammed with the addition of a good eyeliner. I like the gel liner Decorative Diva highlighted here, as well as Starry Eyed liner from Too Faced and Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide On Liners. Black is the standard, but think about adding a bold color to your usual repertoire for a touch of oomph.

A highlighting cream or powder and be used on your cheeks, under your brow, or on the inner or outer corner of your eyes for a lively bit of added sparkle and shine that matches your festive mood. Lots of loose shadows and pigments can do double duty for you here, like Becca’s loose shimmer powder in “Angel” and The Body Shop’s mineral eye color in “Radiant Graphite.”

Try a little shimmer on your lips with something like Prescriptives Colorscope lipcolor in “Winter Rose,” and icy pink that seems as though it would work on pretty much everyone. Don’t go glitter crazy though, try to keep it confined to just one area (eyes OR lips) unless you plan on going over the top and looking like a disco ball. Red lips are always a hit for any special occasion, try Urban Decay’s lipstick in “Gash”, “Gravity”, Or “Revolution”.

Many brands have pressed or loose powders with a touch of shimmer or glitter that are great dusted over your face with a fluffy brush to finish off your look. I like MAC’s iridescent loose powder for a glowing sheen that finishes off your fun wintery face.

With a little guidance and maybe an extra product or two, you can have a new look to bring in the New Year with STYLE!!
