Shannon, I think your Aunt was married to my Uncle - he was just as rude to always say something about "putting on some weight" - which is one of the worst thing a teenage girl wants to hear. Ugh.

Jen, Thanks so much for posting this. I have a bff that has "issues" and can't see how beautiful she is - I gave her the little snippet of poem this morning. :)

Justina's book will no doubt land on our teen team at Shaping Youth in a big way (where we cover media and marketing's impact on kids!)

We're constantly using entertainment mediums to flip the messages backwards to kids in 'fight fire with fire' tactics to absolve them of unrealistic ideals (think 'Dove evolution spot' amped up tenfold) Brava, Justina!

For more inspiration, also check out the BlogHer "letter to my body" meme where women have been writing appreciative thank yous for its daily doings: http://www.blogher.com/letter-my-body We use this concept with Shaping Youth as a teen 'homework' exercise that teens love to tell via movie trailer style with Animoto photo uploads...

Likewise, these :90 videos for Justina are a great way to use m-power (media) to empower...to "find your own beauty" as defined by YOU not the media and marketing industry!

I absolutely LOVE this concept and contest, and will pay it forward on Shaping Youth and our body image resource blog partner, Dr. Robyn's 'Kiss my Assets' pronto! Thanks!

In front of the entire class?! Makes me want to scream! Being the mother of five daughters, and along with my own personal issues, I also love this essay.

Isn't Justina amazing?! I am very confident you would enjoy reading her new book, "North of Beautiful." Be sure to check it out sometime! :) Jen

I love this. "Ugly" words always haunt us. I still remember being 13 and being called "fat" in front of my whole dance class by my dance teacher. Or at my grandfather's funeral last year when an Aunt I hadn't seen in years said, "Wow you look so good, I almost didn't recognize you." Gee thanks, right? Sometimes I have to remember what is beautiful about me and thank God for my sons, who make sure I know I am the most beautiful mom in the world everyday.
