Unwanted facial hair woes keep popping up, literally! Let’s give Carly some good facial hair removal advice.
Okay you ppl are all older than me, you see i am only 13. I have some facial hair above my upper lip and i bleach it like every 4 days. It made my hair look a little lighter, but still VERY noticeable. So my mom bought me one of those “smooth away†products, you know where u like rub the hairs away. Again the hairs are lighter then before but still VERY noticeable. No one at my school has this problem, I’m the only one and i feel so ugly
Plus, sometimes ppl say something like OMG u have a moustache! I just look away, but secretly cry so much when i get home! I am sick of this….please i need help, what can i do????? comment back soon plz, thx -Carly
My two cents? Sweet Carly, giving you all the support and positive energy I can. Let me reinforce with you that many people struggle with this issue, including those that are 13 (you can ask my two teenage daughters and they will verify this).
Waxing and shaving are probably your best bets for temporarily removing unwanted facial hair. Although, let’s ask others and find out what other brilliant solutions we can come up with!
Many hugs! Jen

You’re definitely not the only one, Carly. I’d say just get it waxed…it’s the easiest thing to do. Oh, and definitely do NOT use those products like NAIR! It will irritate your skin and only make it red and more noticeable.
Hi Carly! Everyone gets hair above their lip! I am blonde and I even get hair on my face. I use the Sally Hansen wax for the face and it does hurt, but it makes your upper lip completely smooth! and will last much longer than bleaching. Hope this helps!
Heyy Carly!
Hare Krishna dude. Best of luck!
You are so not alone! My name is Amanda, this is my moms site btw. I am 15 years old. Man, little kids come up to me like all the time, and they are like “Dude! You have a mustache.” Its not cool at all for them to point that out. I’m like, “Umm yeah i know, I have a mirror bud.” Ouch, it can be painful, but what I do is i wax it off. About every two weeks or so, but I’m comfortable with my body. I’m not the one who has to look at my own face all the time. Haha. I feel bad for the suckers who do. But really, everyone’s self conscious about their bodies, and a lot of people have facial hair.
OMG i just won im so excited!!!!! thank you soooo much
Hola Carly. :]
Sweety trust me you are not alone.
My name is Indira, i am 17 years old and i have facial hair just like every other beautiful woman in this world. If you talk to someone who says they don’t have a mustache or facial hair then they are lying.
If people say things to you like; “oh my, you have a mustache” then they are probably just trying to take attention away from a flaw that they have.
Everyone is flawed, but flaws are beautiful, and you are beautiful.
I want to ask you to do something for me.
Its fine it you don’t do it but i really think it would help because it really helped me.
Everyday when you look in the mirror instead of looking at yourself and saying something like “ugh i don’t like my facial hair” say something like “wow my eyes look really pretty today or wow i look really cute in this outfit or wow my hair looks freakin bomb today.” i want you to compliment yourself everyday.
Also if your mom says its ok write on your mirror everything you love about yourself.
on my mirror i wrote down
Amazing
Special
Talented
Beautiful
Friendly
Loving
&
Loved
and i tell myself everyday that that’s what i am, who i am and what i love to be.
also compliment other people on something you like about them, it makes you feel happy and better about yourself as well.
You are beautiful and amazing.
Believe that.

Hi Carly,
Please what ever you do DO NOT EVER shave your face. It is the worst thing a girl/woman can do. It will eventually cause a shadow like men get and the hair will get prickly and there is nothing feminine about it. It sucks being hairy (I blame it on the Mediterranean blood in my family LOL) but it can be taken care of easily and discretely. Waxing is the best thing to do unless you can get laser hair removal, but that is very expensive. I actually started waxing right around your age and if I couldn’t do that then my mom bought me a depilatory that is specifically for the face (see if you can find Better Off! in your area). I’ll admit waxing does hurt but the hair does thin out over time and you don’t have to deal with pricklies or the light fuzz cuz its gone. At your age it might be too expensive so then I’d do the depilatory cream until you can afford to start waxing. I won’t lie, it hurts a little but it is something that you will get used to. Good luck and even though I know it’s hard and that you feel ugly and alone, know that you are not alone nor are you ugly! I’m old enough to be your mother and this is an issue that I’ve dealt with my entire life but no one would know because I deal with it discretely.
Please DON’T shave.
Good luck and big hugs!
If your skin is sensitive, you can also try threading… it’s totally normal to have that hair!
Waxing / Shaving / Threading – they’re all good options. I personally think that threading hurts more than waxing, but that’s just my opinion (and maybe I didn’t have a good technician).
The only thing that will permanently remove facial hair, is electrolysis. It is done hair-by-hair, so time consuming, but I think less painful than waxing. It can also be expensive, so before you make that kind of investment, see a Dr. to make sure you don’t have a minor hormone imbalance (such as PCOS) that needs to be addressed. It would really suck to spend that kind of money just to have the hair grow back.
(BTW, PCOS- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, apparently affects 1 in 10 women at some point, and is easily treated with birth control pills. The most common symptoms are facial hair and painful periods)
Oh my gosh i have a whole page dedicated to me! Thank u all for all the support and help! And also thanks Jen for the email….it means a lot everyone
!!!! But also i have a few questions for you guys, okay so i was thinking of getting my upper lip waxed, but will it grow back darker and pricklier and more noticiable. Because if so i dont know if i would want to do that anymore! Thanks again, and please write back soon
Carly
I joke with my husband that I bleach, tweeze, wax or shave 80% of my body (though I’d NEVER confess to what or how nor let anyone see the process! LOL!) . I have a lot of body hair, it’s dark and my skin is light so I feel like it makes my skin look dirty. BTW, Joleen bleach is the cheapest and IMHO best way to lighten body hair.
Waxing doesn’t leave stubble so don’t worry. It pulls the hair from the root so the whole hair has to regrow. It feels softer because there is no blunt edge like when you shave. Waxing also lasts a few weeks which is better than shaving.
I do shave the hairs on my lip in emergencies and I’m 34 and haven’t had any problem with it yet. I also tweeze the little obvious hairs between treatments. Always pull in the direction the hair is growing. I agree with everyone here that eventually you just get used the sensation and the pain of any of these methods won’t bother you after just a few times.
Hard wax is gentler on your skin than hot wax which will make a difference when you get older in your skin’s elasticity. Hard wax also leaves a few of the finest peach fuzz hairs so I think it looks the most natural. You can find lots of salons that do hard wax instead, just ask. Threading is also gentle to your skin but I think it hurts the worst. If you go with depilatory creams, replace them frequently. I only seemed to get burns with older bottles.
Best of luck! EVERYONE has something they dislike about themselves. This is an easy one!
Awesome waxing tips bookgirl! Thank you so much.
Jen
I’m fair, born blonde (now it’s morphed into a dull light brownish color though) and have always had these peculiarly dark eyebrows and some darker but fine lip hair. It’s not too noticeable, but I get self-conscious like you do.
I agree waxing will give you the best results, but in a pinch, these little facial razors do the job nicely. You can get them on the shaving products aisle at the drugstore or Target/Walmart.
They look like this:

Don’t feel like you’re the only one! There are plenty of people with the same thing. It’s certainly not unnatural.
Oh, PS – I’d recommend getting a pro to do the wax job though. I just tried waxing my arms and did a number on them. I have all of these scabs and sores now. :-0
thx u guys for all the help…im going to go toa salon and try waxing!!! i hope it works!
Carly
Wishing you the best Carly! A quick reminder not to put any makeup or products on your newly waxed areas for at least 24 hours. Big hugs! Jen

Is there a best way to remove unwanted facial hair?…
Women with excessive facial hair usually see it along the upper lip, down the sides of the face, and on the chin. Because facial hair is typically much more than a few wayward hair follicles, plucking these areas isn’t an effective method. What…..
well i did it and got it waxed……but im worried each time it will grow back darker? will it grow back darkier and more noticable between each time i wax it???
[...] is back! After reading the advice we gave her (no pressure people), “Hair Removal Woes: Let’s help Carly out,” she had her upper lip waxed, but still has some concerns. well i did it and got it [...]
Facial hair removal is really a daunting task for some teens. Shaving on a daily basis always leaves you worried about whether or not the hair is visible. :
Laser Hair Removal is the only permanent alternative. With your guardians consent you can effectively reduce unwanted hair permanently. Get a free consult in your local laser clinic and see what they advice.
