Roxanne asks, “What can I expect if I have curly thin fine hair that gets frizzy?”
Without a doubt, fine-haired curlies have their own set of special needs. Hopefully this post will help you enhance your curl without weighing it down, and keep frizz to a minimum.
What increases the Frizz-Factor?
- Lack of moisture and protein in the hair, or damaged hair. This can be due to coloring, processing, overuse of heat appliances.
- Humidity. That dang moisture content in the air upsets the balance of moisture within the hair, thus causing chaos.
Best Practices to keep fine hair frizz-free:
- Brushing. If you can avoid it, only comb through your wet-conditioned hair. Style your hair with your fingers.
- Drying. Air-drying is the best choice, followed by loose scrunching with the use of a microfiber towel (Curl Cloths and Cyclic Towels are my favorite).
- Use duckbill clips on the crown of your head to lift top curls where needed.
- Although I have yet to try it, many sites recommend sleeping on a satin pillowcase to reduce the amount of breakage to the hair and reduce tangles.
- Keep it light. Finding the right balance between conditioning and hold, mousses and gels tend to work best.
- Using a low-suds shampoo and/or co-poo (wash hair using conditioners). Deep condition once a week.
- Once your curls are dry, rub a little pomade into the palm of your hands and smooth over your hair.
During the day, freshen up limp, droopy curls with some additional moisture by spritzing on Jessicurl’s Awe Inspiraling Spray. I also *LOVE* Ojon’s Shine & Protect Glossing Mist, as a great way to add instant shine, eliminate fly-aways (aka “chicken feathers”) and combat humidity.
A Curly Cool Tip: Store your hair sprays in the fridge! A cool spritzing over a hot head is sure to lift your hair and your spirits!

Jen and Roxanne,
I can tell you that I won a satin pillowcase, and it makes such a difference! My curls are not flattened and frizzy in the morning. I could almost get away with just putting some pomade in or a spray in conditioner.
I would highly recommend trying this out!
I need to try those Curl Cloths or cyclic towels….
Good to know! I will have to try a satin pillowcase as well. Thanks Stephanie!
Sounds like the satin pillowcase is definately worth a try.
I have curly hair too and my hair looks like a ball of frizz in the mornings. LOL! I guess I will have to try and see if a satin pillow case works for me as well.
i use herbal essence to keep my frizzy curly hair down. once u get out of the shower just put in a little leave in conditioner and let it air dry. then put in a frizz protecter spray (also herbal essence) give it a try….it works for me everyday
You are absolutely right with your advice. My best friend watches Regis and Kelly and she told me that Kelly Ripa had switched to a satin pillowcase, Kelly loved them and she said to go and purchase a satin pillowcase, and my girl friend did.
My girlfriend is sooo happy about how her hair and face feels. She had a problem with frizzies and breakage. The satin doesn’t take out the moisture and oils that your hair and skin really need to remain healthy, soft and shiny.
I went and bought a king size set from A Touch of Satin because that’s where my friend went. They are amazingly smooth and I’m not getting split-ends like I had been. The pillowcases wash beautifully and I can just take them right out of the dryer and put them on my pillows and they look awesome!
The company’s website is http://atouchofsatin.com. They had so many different solid colors and they even had a black and white satin pillowcase page.
Check them out and let me know what you think.
Great article with a lot of really good info. Thanks for all the help!

Never thought of using a satin pillow, cool! I think it’s definitely worth giving it a try. Although I still believe that crucial is the hair care products you use. For curly hair
I used to put the shea butter but it was annoying and I don’t like the smell to be honest.
especially, try Batia&Aleeza – my sister brought it from the States and I’m pretty amazed how it works. It’s made by two sisters, hairdressers – both with curly hair btw.
Thanks girls, and if you try let me know how it works with you!

Typically when you think of Made from Earth you think of organic and healthy hair products – but I tried the Tea + Protein Shampoo because even though I have a lot of hair, it is fine and I heard it aids in the strength and vitality of the hair follicles. I have to say that I have loved this product! I even got my mom using it, and my best friend.
I have tried other products of this line as well, and have similarly enjoyed the results!
[...] from “A Touch of Satin” made a comment on my post about using satin pillowcases for frizz-free curly hair. And I emailed her, stating that I would like to test out a satin pillowcase, and she very kindly [...]
Whoever said “He giveth with one hand, and taketh away with the other” was probably not thinking of curly or wavy hair. Nonetheless, it is apropos because those lucky enough to have naturally curly hair are also sometimes visited by the dreaded frizzies.
Take heart, lucky ones, Shielo’s Bounce Style Creme is just what you need to zap the fly-away frizzies. Further, we need no longer dread the first few weeks of a new perm. This styling lotion is especially formulated to enhance and form curls on naturally curly or permed hair. Presto – soft, shiny, manageable ringlets.
Simply towel dry and then distribute lotion through your hair, and then style.
