Hey Kelly! Congested and acne prone skin can really benefit from using Retin-A, no doubt. I recently read (and I need to remember where my source was from) that it is a myth that Retin-A increases sun sensitivity, although sun protection should be a part of all daily skin regimens. They said that starting Retin-A during the summer is actually a good thing, because our skin is less dry and therefore less likely to be irritated and flaky while beginning retinoids than opposed to during the winter months.

I have used eye products that use higher concentrations of retinoids, and would be cautious about using prescription strength Retin-A around or too close to the eyes.

Best wishes with beautiful skin! Oh to be 27 again…

I use Retin-A off and on throughout the year for my acne. I usually take a break from it in the summer because I'm so fair to begin with and increased sun sensitivity is not something I need. I like it, and really, I have no wrinkles, but I'm only 27.

I would never think to put it near my eye area though, do people do that too to prevent wrinkles?

This quote from your SkinDeep expert "and this can only mean the pH has been altered" is patently false. There is no clinical information that will back this statement up. The pH of retinoids are the same or near the skin's pH. Unlike AHA's they do not exfoliate the skin by lowering the pH. e have over 20 years of observed data that demonstrates retinoids are SAFE. They are chemopreventative as well as chemotherapeutic and everyone should be on some form of Vitamin A.

I agree that there are other active ingredients that will boost collagen production, but they are marginally effective as a retinoid. Also, retinoids are the only compound that normalize and shrink the function of the sebaceous glands.

Overall this is a very informative post...thanks!

I should disclose that I own a company that produces a retinol product.
