I’ll be dog-goned! Almost two weeks without a flare up, and then guess who comes to visit? A lovely, deep blemish on my chin. With so many spot treatments available, each claiming to clear up blemishes overnight, containing ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Tea Tree Oil, Sulfur, and onto “kitchen cupboard” tips like applying ice, heat, or a tiny dab of minty toothpaste. Do any of these emergency spot treatments really do the trick?
In my four decades on the planet, I have tried MANY spot treatments, and realistically know that zits cannot go away instantly (especially the deep ones), and it will take patience (and keeping my picking-fingers away from it), to assist in its disappearance. I want to share with you two spot treatments that I have found that really make a difference.
A gentle, natural spot treatment in a handy roll-on pen! I love the menthol smell and slight tingle this leaves on my skin (it feels like it is protecting and disinfecting at the same time). The formula uses Olive Leaf Extract and natural Thyme, Lavender and Rosemary instead of the traditional and harsh antibacterial ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide. While this formula is a bit oily, the formula is clear and can be used during the day without being too noticeable. While using this, I have noticed a visible reduction in the size and severity of a blemish, and an accelerated healing time. It is pricey at $25, but should last you a year+, a small dab does the job, and repeat application throughout the day and before going to bed.
If you want to go the Benzoyl Peroxide route, but don’t like the dryness or irritated skin that comes with its use, PCA’s Acne Cream is a must try. Lactic Acid and Tea Tree Oil aid in healing, while BP kills the nasty acne-causing bacteria. I used this recently on my chin blemish (sigh), and noticed reduction and relief within two days. Maybe not an instant cure, but a great improvement within a short period of time. For about $14, this container will last you 6 months easily. You can also use this product lightly on those areas that tend to breakout.
Best wishes in your battle with blemishes and please feel free to share any of your favorite acne spot treatments!

I’ve used the toothpaste trick — it has to be regular paste, not any of that fancy-pants gel stuff — and it’s worked wonders! It actually works better than a lot of the commercial spot treatments and benzoyl peroxide creams I’ve tried.
I’ve heard another good one is crushing up an aspirin pill, mixing it with enough water to make a paste and dabbing it on the blemish.
Interesting as I just noticed a lovely chin breakout as well. I have the best luck with benzoil peroxide but I hate that it can bleach clothes and sheets. Someday they will come out with something as awesome minus the bleaching
Sorry to double post, but my email was wrong, so in case that matters…
Aaah! I hate Benzoyl peroxide bleaches! The trick after talking to the derm is to use as little as possible and let it soak in. OTC, I’ve had the best luck with Bye Bye Blemish (found at Ulta’s). The ingredients are as follows:
Active Ingredients: Sulfur (10%) (Purpose: Acne Treatment)
Inactive Ingredients: Isopropyl Alcohol, Water (Aqua), Zinc Oxide, Salicylic Acid, Camphor, Aluminum Magnesium Silicate, Iron Oxide (CI 77491)
Sulfer is an anti-bacterial, and I can’t believe they are listing Salicylic Acid as inactive! Also, I believe the Camphor helps with drying the affected area (important if you are super oily like me) and the Zinc Oxide acts as an anti-inflammatory.
Great to hear from all of you and thank you for your zit zapping tips!
No fancy-dancy toothpaste, got it! I have heard wonderful things about Bye Bye Blemish as well. Don’t you just dip a q-tip in and dab it on the spot?
