Skin Myth: The use of all oils should be avoided if you have oily or blemish prone skin.
While it is true, there are some oils that should be avoided if you have oily or blemish prone skin, adding skin-loving essential and carrier oils to your daily skin care regimen can be a very good thing. Here is why.
How oils work? Because oil is an emollient, it fills in the gaps between the cells of the skin. Oil-based products replace essential lipids in the outer dermal layer replacing moisture and creating younger, healthier looking skin. The chemical composition of the skin absorbs oils more easily than water-based moisturizers. Even if your skin is oily or blemish prone, additional hydration facilitates healing and will boost your skin’s glow and vitality.
Oils to Avoid. Avoid using these oils on your face because they may congest the skin: Lanolin, Cocoa Butter, Mineral Oil, and Petroleum.
So oil can benefit oily skin? Yes, the right oils used on oily skin can be. Natural health advocate and creator of her own all-natural herbal skin care line, Annmarie Gianni uses Grapeseed Oil as the base oil in her Facial Oil for oily, blemish-prone skin. She explains that Grapeseed Oil is actually slightly astringent and a very fine oil, which absorbs quickly and delivers your skin’s own natural oils deeper, allowing them to penetrate better into your skin.

Hi Jen
Thanks for a great article. I’m subscribed to your RSS so get updated when you make a post.
I completely agree with the oils that should be avoided, and think that grapeseed oil is fantastic for skin.
I wrote an article about the top 5 essential oils for skin. If you are interested, please take a look at:

Hi Daisy! Great to hear from you and I’ll be sure to check out your article.
Best! Jen
I’ve had acne since i was about 13. I found out about an herbal treatment that works really well and costs about $4. It’s called witch hazel. Its a natural astringent and antibiotic, works very well and is cheap.
Definitely helps with oily skin.
Yes I do agree that not all oil based product make your skin oilier than it should be. I was afraid to use moisturizers before because it might break me out. lol. I will recommend the annmarie facial oil to a friend who is acne prone.
Last year, when I started putting oils on my legs, it started getting very dry. So I stopped.
I love using natural oils on my face, especially at night. They feel so nourishing and really do a great job of moisturizing my skin. They are not for everyone though (not that everyone can’t benefit from them) I know many of my friends just wouldn’t give them a chance because they feel much different than your typical skin care product. It takes some time to get used them but once you do your skin will thank you.
Hmnm….well I have combination skin but my skin has very oily skin.. I’ll let her know for sure.. thanks for sharing!
How funny – I just wrote a post tonight about moisturizing creams for all skin types, oily and dry. I can relate to both kinds, since my skin is combo! Oily in the T-zone; dry in the cheeks.
Depriving your skin of oils can cause it to dry out and then over-produce its own natural oils. This will make your acne get worse! So thank you for reminding your readers that there are lots of oil-product options for people with oily skin.
Hello Jen, thank you for this interesting article! I really enjoy your blog.
I would however like to point out that while you are correct in saying that there are many helpful oils for skin, many of the ones that you listed are actually harmful to not just oily skin, but to all skin types. Neem oil for example, while it has been shown to have some antimicrobial properties to it, is extremely toxic for skin and can make oily/acne prone skin worse. Many essential oils while, smelling great, are hazordous to skin because of their volatile compounds and can cause cell death and/or sensitivity to UV making skin susceptible to sun damage.
Did you hear about the farmer who lost control of his tractor in the cow pasture? No! Did he hurt the cows? No, he just grazed them!
