I love using a pre-foundation primer, but for some reason the silicone in many of them congest my skin. The very smart cosmetic company tarte recently released a silicone-free primer ReCreate, which contains skin nurturing Jojoba and Sunflower Oil as well as Vitamin E. This primer is a great way to prep your skin and add some additional moisture without the worry of breakouts.

Hi there, it’s your friendly primer & foundation fanatic friend Jen! This summer I took a very quick trip to Las Vegas and made sure to stop over at the Sephora store on the strip. While going through the store, I came across the Hourglass Cosmetics display and sampled their primer. The product itself seemed very compelling to buy, but the price tag ($52) kept me from doing so.
A few months later I was given to review (big woot!) and was overjoyed to try out the Hourglass Veil fluid makeup foundation and Veil Mineral Primer for Mythbuster Beauty.
The Veil Mineral Primer differs from many primers because it does not have the heavy dimethicone feel, and being oil-free does seem to mattify and even out the look of the skin. I am not sure (more…)
A great question came my way recently:
Hi Jen, I’m searching for a natural/organic SPF face day lotion. Is the Alison Raffaele primer moisturizing enough for a daytime use? I don’t have dry skin; I’m oily T zone, acne prone on cheeks, and can have sun spots pop up if I’m not extra-over-zealous with my SPF in summer.
Also, I’m trying a new natural/organic skin care regimen by Sophyto and they recommended a more natural SPF lotion to go with. So here I am.
Recommend something for me MBB!
Jami aka Bionic Beauty
Gotcha Jami. You need an SPF day lotion that blocks the suns rays without causing your skin to shine and makeup to slide off. You would also prefer an organic sunscreen lotion. (more…)
DERMAdoctor, how do we adore thee? The fun purple packaging, the helpful friendly website, and, of course, the extensive line of products giving us easy access to treatments for a variety of skin related issues that most prestige companies skip entirely. Honestly, if you’ve only ever seen DERMAdoctor on the shelves at your specialty beauty store you will be amazed at what they offer in their full product line. From Athlete’s Foot to Tinea Versicolor (it’s okay, I had to look it up too), they have great selection of helpful products and tips to go with them. I am personally a devoted fan of KP Duty and KP Duty Scrub (buy the kit for $60), which has done wonders for my “chicken bump” arms. Since I have moderately oily skin and have had such great results with KP Duty, I was thrilled to try out Tease Zone oil control gel. (more…)
1. Like Mo or DecoDiva, you can express yourself in St. Patty’s Day fashion with beautiful green color on your eyelids!
2. You can go green by buying eco-friendly skincare or haircare products:
Like trying one (or several) of Herbaria’s green soaps in: Triple Mint Oatmeal “Just in time for refreshment in warmer weather, we invite you to enjoy the natural menthol tingle and scent packed into this new bar,” Lime Coconut Aloe, or Spearmint Orange!
The other day, Rachelle the fabulous author of Fashionably Foodie and contributor to the Posh Mama site asked a question about starting on Retin-A at the post, “All About Retinoids: Considering Retin-A.”
jen,
so i turned the big 3-0 this summer and i am ready to do something. (guess i need to adopt marilyn’s “Start aging, and shut up!†mantra still.) i live in mexico and can buy retin a and renova over the counter. soooo- how do i use them?  like moisturizer, after cleansing? instead of moisturizer or over it? how much do i use? and do you know if i use it while i’m nursing? (guess i could google it.) TIA!hope your beans are delish~
rachelle
First and foremost, the beans I made using the recipe that Rachelle posted on the Posh Mama site were delish, and my family totally stuffed themselves last night. I served them with rice and homemade Pico De Gallo, very yum!
Lucky you to get Retin-A OTC! And I am not a Doctor, so I can give you some advice, but would strongly recommend you work with a licensed Dermatologist.  I have heard that the lowest concentration is where you should start (.025%) or possibly .05%, and you should research the topic of using retinoids while nursing. I surmise that some will say okay, and some will say nay. I tend to side with how young is your baby and how often do you nurse? Retin-A is simply a concentrated form of Vitamin A and a minimal amount is absorbed into your bloodstream. This episode starts with not just a product, but the great little boutique that introduced me to it.
I had the pleasure of visiting Milwaukee with my husband for a few days and we stayed in the historic Third Ward District. On our last day in town we wandered down the street from an incredible pub we’d eaten at the night before (seriously, Milwaukee has great food) and happened across Blush.
Blush is a beauty boutique with an open, welcoming atmosphere. It is well lit and airy, with thoughtfully placed decorative touches and plenty of shelves and tables packed with products just begging to be explored. They have a few major anchor lines, most notably Laura Mercier, and several other lines that are slightly less known but clearly well chosen. A Laura Mercier event was starting the day we were scheduled to leave town, of course, and an artist was teaching the staff how to apply LM’s holiday looks, but everyone was still very kind and attentive. I was assisted by a lovely and helpful woman, and I asked if she was the store’s owner. She informed me with a justified glow of pride that it is her daughter’s store and she just “helps out”. It really is a family affair, with mom Jodi supporting her daughters, Sarah (owner) and Nikki (Skin care specialist). I am dying for the chance to return and try out their brow bar! If you find yourself in Milwaukee, stop in to say hi, see what they have to show you, and tell them Mythbuster Beauty sent ya! Since I can buy the major lines here at home, I asked Jodi to show me the best kept secret in their store. She didn’t disappoint, and this is what I found:
Here is something beyond fabulous from Urban Decay, and this week Mythbuster Beauty is giving away two of them! Urban Essentials contains three Urban Decay must-haves. . . . an exclusive, oversized bottle of the coveted Eyeshadow Primer Potion (60% more!) and TWO full sized Eyeshadows—Midnight Cowboy and Goddess.
Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion is a cult-favorite product that gives you vibrant eye shadow color that lasts all day – without creasing!  It’s brilliant and I couldn’t wear my eyeshadow any other way. UD’s Primer Potion was a top ten favorite at MBB for 2007: Top Ten of 2007: Urban Decay’s Eye Primer Potion.
The two full-size eyeshadows are in Goddess (midnight blue w/ lots of electric blue microglitter), and Midnight Cowboy (subtle golden-beige w/ gold glitter). They look beautiful paired up together and even better when using UD’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion. The Urban Essentials Set retails for $39.00.Â

Meli recently asked a question at the Bare Escentuals VS. Drug Store brand Mineral Makeup post:
I would be happy to get your thoughts on Bare’s Get Started kit. Quality vs price? Which one of the following would the best pick? Bare, Maybelline or Everyday Minerals? What about L’Oreal?
Sincerely, thank you for your precious answers, Meli
Hi Meli, so great to hear from you!  There are so many mineral makeup lines and so many factors to take into consideration. Hope this information will help you make an informed decision!
Here are a few things to consider in choosing the best mineral foundation for you:
Here are my feelings on the specific mineral makeup brands you listed:
1. L’Oreal’s mineral makeup is formulated with talc, so if you have sensitive or breakout prone skin, watch out! Not recommended.
2. Maybelline’s mineral makeup is best for those with normal or dry skin. This is based upon many comments from a review at the Makeup Moxie website.  Another comment was that while they love this mineral foundation, but do not like the brush that is included.  I would suggest purchasing your own kabuki brush for optimum application. If you have oily skin it will not work well for you, but it is a great value and you can purchase it at your local drug store.
3. Bare Minerals is the most popular of all the mineral makeup lines, and many people love it. I think it is best suited for those with oily skin. For individuals with drier skin, it can accentuate fine lines and look flaky. This line is more expensive, but their starter kits offer a better value ($30), and can be purchased online, department stores, and at Target.
4. Everyday Minerals is a wonderful line and offers different formulas for different skin types (Original Glo, Semi-Matte, Matte, and Intensive) and at very reasonable price ($12 for a large container). Their samples are generous and allow deciding which formulas are best for your skin. Highly recommended for both quality and value.
My personal experience with mineral makeup is mixed. My best results have been with the Everyday Mineral line, and that could be due to my specific skin type (combination skin and sensitive to breakouts) and I have liked their Original Glo and Semi-Matte formulas.  Ideally, I still prefer a liquid foundation or a tinted moisturizer.Â
My biggest complaints with SOME mineral makeup foundations are:
But I realize that with the right formula and the right skin type, your skin can look amazing while using a mineral makeup foundation. Here are some other MBB posts on the subject of mineral makeup:
Best wishes Meli, and hope to hear what you end up using and how you feel about it. JEN
